In 2002 Gore Verbinski‘s The Ring kicked off a string of J-Horror (Japanese Horror) Hollywood remakes with commercial success. Sadly those J-Horrors didn’t fare the same success however this Halloween Evil is reborn again as Rings the third instalment delivers it’s first UK trailer.
After a long wait (11 years) for the third movie based on the popular 1998 J-Horror franchise Ringu, has had a fair share of false starts. Halloween now might just have scary treat in store as Samara arrives in the digital age. Beware of your mobiles, tablets and internet she has more ways to get you!
A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. Rings we meet a young woman who becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a āmovie within the movieā that no one has ever seen before.
It’s amazing to think the 11 years since the last film (The Ring 2) in 2005 how technology has enhanced and plays a big part of our daily lives. The body count is going to be bigger than ever with the VHS video now replaced by an online video and off course social media!!!
On paper this is mean’t be a continuation of American franchise version but plays more like a reboot be it of a ‘softer variety’.Director F. Javier GutiĆ©rrez (Before the Fall) has clarified it’s a sequel as it plays in real time with events of the previous 2 films. What does look like he has also as done incorporated other horror sub-genres especially body horror, the infamous ‘Ring’ appears on it’s victims.
Rings could potentially be the new ‘Paranormal Activity’ filling that yearly Halloween gap and if they play there cards right dive into Samara’s origins, they might have a winner!
Rings stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent DāOnofrio with the film arriving on 31st October (USA 28th October).
