Enjoy Roxy’s Films of the Year screening of Monsters & Attack The Block

It’s that time when we look back at all the new movies we’ve screened at Roxy in 2011 – all 66 of them!
In the first half of the year we had some of the big Hollywood films which we enjoyed, including The Fighter and particularly the indie hit The Kids Are Alright. Although they were all swept aside by the triumphant The King’s Speech.
But we’re not just looking at the big films and the likes of the beautiful, touching Norwegian Wood was a big favourite, as was the delightful, if slightly lightweight Submarine and the similar yet under-rated recent Beginners. And one of the most surprising and satisfying films of the year was the excellent Animal Kingdom.
The Brits delivered again with Danny Boyle’s surprisingly good 127 Hours, Mike Leigh’s touching Another Year and Asif Kapadia’s excellent documentary Senna.
But when it came to our favourites, we still couldn’t make up our minds whether The Tree of Life was a masterpiece or load of tosh, so that didn’t make the cut. And whilst Inside Job wins the award for the most important, must-see film of the year, we decided that the Runner-up Roxy film of the year should go to…
…Gareth Edwards‘ brilliant Monsters. Most of the talk was about how the film was made on a shoestring with all the effects done on a home computer. But aside from that, this really is a fantastic, intelligent, involving and heartfelt film. If you haven’t seen it yet, and many still haven’t, take our recommendation and check it out!
But film of the year, was the hands-down, classic bit of brilliant old-fashioned B-movie entertainment courtesy of Joe Cornish. It’s rare that a film manages to balance all its elements so well, and this blends comedy, satire, social commentary and B-movie homages with non-stop monster action in a style that doesn’t take itself too seriously (Mr Malick, take note…). As such it delivers the most enjoyable, entertaining couple of hours viewing we’ve had all year and walks away with our Film of the Year title – Attack the Block
