Closing this years Sundance Film Festival, the indie dramedy continues the Netflix revolution that there more than just another online provider of streaming films. A challenge to conventional cinema going. What better way to learn the meaning of life by embarking on a roadtrip visiting lame landmarks.
The Fundamentals of Caring follows Ben (Rudd), a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor(Craig Roberts), a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World’s Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.
Paul Rudd‘s fans will truly see their favourite actor is a versatile actor, not just suited to mainstream cinema but has the touch for independent Cinema too. This may not be exactly the best of trailers but what it does give us an idea of the films dark comedic tone wearing it’s indie credentials proudly on it’s sleeve. The chemistry between Rudd and Roberts looks pretty solid and doesn’t fall into saccharine coated generics of carer/patient movies usually go down.It looks to have the charms but is not scared to get a bit naughty too.
Based on the novel by Jonathan Evison and written, directed and produced by Rob Burnett, The Fundamentals Of Caring stars Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson and Frederick Weller. The film will make it’s European Premiere at EIFF on 16th June, encore on 18th June, with Netflix UK&Ireland premiere on 24th June.
