MCM Comic Con returned to the Excel Centre last weekend drawing record crowds of over 133,000 people. The show has grown an incredible amount since last summer for along with more fans it has brought in bigger guests.
Guest stars included Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman) Kunal Nayyar (Big Bang Theory) Aiden Turner (The Hobbit), Dominic Cooper (Preacher) as well as stars from Game of Thrones and other major TV shows. Alongside signings and photo graphs there were also far more panels and events this year to pass the time.
As always though, it is the fans who are the real star attraction. The cosplayers are a treat to see and watching people express themselves in such a colourful and elaborate way will always be a real joy.
Costumes this year ranged from the usual comic book, video game and film characters. There were as many Harley Quinns as ever, although at least a quarter were in the Margot Robbie style from the upcoming Suicide Squad movie but there was a remarkable increase in Deadpool‘s, assumingly due to the overwhelming success of the Ryan Reynolds film. If you want to be paralytically drunk then play the drinking game where you drink whenever you see one of these two costumes.
For me personally the two highlights of the weekend were the great performances by Japanese band Band-Maid and the fact that at the other half of the convention centre was occupied by a Euroanaethesia conference and had endless people in costumes trying to get in and being turned away.
This comic con is now the third largest in the world and it seems to be getting bigger and bigger with each passing event. I personally can’t wait to see this con go from strength to strength and I recommend anyone with a geeky side to attend the next London event in October. I know I’ll be there, and I wonder which character will be the next to play a drinking game to.
