Elizabeth Olsen On Superhero Fatigue And Scarlet Witch Return

Elizabeth Olsen on superhero fatigue and Scarlet Witch return

During a special discussion about her career over the weekend at the 2025 Hamptons International Film Festival’s, Elizabeth Olsen spoke about her career so far and, of course, attention switched to her acclaimed work as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU and discussed her future and whether she thinks superhero fatigue is real.

“It’s really fruitful, and the stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it,” she said, later going on to address superhero-movie fatigue: “Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial.”
Fans have been quick to speculate about her return to the MCU, especially with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, as well as the first appearance of a brand-new X-Men film coming soon, to which Olsen says she hopes to return, despite Scarlet Witch  apparently dying in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, adding:

“It is something that I love, and it’s something I always want to return to,” she said “I think the thing that’s been so special about the last five years is I’ve gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I’d love to do that I think fans also want to.”

“There’s nothing else really like it, and I don’t know that I’ll have [that] again unless it’s for an ongoing show,” said Olsen. “I do like that kind of consistency. It feels good. I mean, job security feels nice — I think we can all agree on that.”

She also added that despite the so-called fatigue, the films ultimately need to please fans rather than critics, saying:

“I mean, these movies aren’t for critics, these movies are for fans,” Olsen added.

There have been rumours that Olsen could be seen in Doomsday, although she didn’t get a “chair” like many others did. That said, co-stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland, and Brie Larson didn’t either, so it remains to be seen whether the Scarlet Witch or any of them appear at some point, or if they are set to appear in Secret Wars the following year. We wait to find out.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas on November 18th, 2026. Olsen’s next film, Eternity, which co-stars Miles Teller and Calum Turner, opens in UK cinemas on December 5th.
