Edinburgh Film Festival Reveals 70th Anniversary Programme

Golf, Whisky, Animated Pixar fish,and immortal highlander warriors make up part of Edinburgh Film Festival which unveiled it’s 2016 programme this morning.

In his second year at new director Mark Adams unveiled the programme for the world’s oldest international film festival now in it’s 70th year. The landmark programme will show a total of 161 features from 46 countries including: 22 World Premieres, 5 International Premieres, 17 European Premieres and 85 UK Premieres.

Highlights for this year include the UK Premiere of the highly-anticipated Disney-Pixar animation Finding Dory, Kevin Smith‘s Yoga Hosers which stars his daughter Harley Quinn Smith. The indie director who directed the likes of Clerks and Dogma will be in attendance as part of In Person talks event . former Sex &The City Star Kim Catrall and Amélie star Dominique Pinon are part off too.

Other highlights include he previously announced Opening/Closing Gala’s Jason Connery‘s Golfing pioneering drama Tommy’s Honour starring Peter Mullen and Gilles MacKinnion‘s re-imagining of the Scottish classic Whisky Galore!starring Gregor Fisher , Eddie Izzard closing the festival.

As well as the big perspective on Scottish Film, there is also the prestigious Michael Powell Award which attract the best of British new films. Chris Foggin‘s Kids In Love starring Will Poulter, Cara Delevingne. David Blair’s Away starring Timothy Spall and Juno Temple.The Mighty Boosh pair Julian Barratt , Noel Fielding star in Mercedes Grower’s Brakes.

The very best in new American independent cinema shines a spotlight on the boundless creativity originating from across the Atlantic. American Dreams Paco Cabezas’ Mr Right starring Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell as an oddball assassin. the European Premiere of Rob Burnett’s The Fundamentals Of Caring a charming comedy-drama that pairs Paul Rudd and rising British star Craig Roberts as caregiver and dependent. Game Of Thrones star Rose Leslie‘s new film Sticky Notes directed by Amanda Sharp will make it’s World Premiere.

Other strands highlights include Florian Gallenberger’s The Colony starring Emma Watson, Daniel Bruhl. Meg Ryan‘s directorial debut  Ithaca and Diego Luna‘s Mr Pig and Jon Cassar’s Forsaken are in line for Audience Award.

Cinephiles looking for special event’s they will be in for a treat 4K version of Highlander with Clancy Brown Kurgan himself looking for the ‘prize’. Danny Boyle maybe in town filming the long awaited sequel to Trainspotting a special 20th anniversary screening will take place. There will also be 70mm special screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey and David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia.Disney Pixar continue year in year out treating fans with great films and they will provide the great movies that will be shown free in the city’s St.Andrew Square. This years films will be Finding Nemo and Star Wars: Episode VII:The Force Awakens along with Mad Max:Fury Road.

Mark Adams, EIFF Artistic Director, said: “It is a real thrill to unveil this year’s programme and I am looking forward to showcasing so many great films and welcoming so many talented filmmakers to our 70th edition. As always we like to offer an incredibly broad range of work to ensure there is always something for everyone – from mesmeric retrospectives through to absorbing new short films, to 130 new features from 46 countries, rest assured this year’s EIFF will challenge, provoke and entertain audiences in equal measure.”
