DVD Review - Get A Job (2016)

We’ve all been there!

LionsGate Home Entertainment presents the UK DVD release for the US comedy “get A Job” Starring Anna Kendrick (Pitch perfect 1&2) and Miles Teller (Whiplash, Two Night Stand).

When Will (Miles teller) gets laid off from his job he begins to treat life like a joke, smoking and drinking with his friends all day, while his girlfriend Jillian (Anna Kendrick) works really hard to get a promotion at her work. As frustration grows Will realises he needs to step up and really get his life in check. He managed to get a digital media job where his skills of video editing makes him realise what his true passion is.

When I first heard about this film I was so excited, as a fan of Anna Kendrick and Miles Teller I could not wait to see how this film turned out. Hearing other reviews from the films US release earlier in the year I was a little disheartened by the negative feedback other critics and reviewers gave the film. However I went in, like I do with every film, with an open mind, avoiding trailers and any major spoilers.

I can tell you now as many negatives this film had, and there was a good few, I still really liked it.

This was a film that really did not live up to my expectations, that is more my own fault than the films, I was sad to see that for a good 20 minutes or so there was not really anything to funny or exciting happening. As the film progressed it began to gain more spark and wit. Although the film wasn’t always laugh out loud funny all the way through, it certainly had its moments.

Something I found out recently about the film was that it was actually filmed in 2012, which kind fo tells you the quality of the film if it took 4 years for it to get a release. In saying that, this does not mean the film is bad in any way it just isn’t of the quality of film we are used to seeing from Kendrick and Teller.

I think though my biggest positive and something many other reviewers fail to point out, even though its pretty straight forward, was the film fantastic and relatable themes.

We have all left college thinking the world was ours, thinking we could get any job that comes out way. Wanting a job with loads of money and perks when really in reality all we want to do is something we love, something we are passionate about.

Even though it took a while for the film to really kick in it did really hit me with this theme. Mainly due to the fact that I am within the age range of the characters in the film, so I am currently in the same position as they are in the film. I think that is why in the end I really liked the film and seen it as a really strong and positive Teen comedy for those of us going through that transition form college to the real world.

Overall Get A Job is a fun film with many flaws but still manages to get across its key theme, and does it well. I think this is one to check out once it hits Netflix and or VoD platforms. If you do see this in shops be sure to check it out as I think it is one most people will like, but don’t go into it thinking it’s the next American Pie. It is what it is and I am happy to see it getting a DVD release here in the UK. Thank You lionsGate.
