Things are starting to get darker in WandaVision with episode 6’s “All New Halloween Spooktacular”.
This week we see the couple in a 90s, Malcom in the Middle style sitcom where the family are enjoying the Halloween celebrations. After the surprise of last weeks’ cliff-hanger, Evan Peter’s Pietro Maximoff serves to run riot with the kids while Wanda tries to keep it under control despite seeming genuinely unsure why or how Pietro is there.

Vision continues to investigate his suspicions of Wanda as he heads to the outskirts of town finding there the world is frozen. Meanwhile, outside Westview Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy are trying to work out what aggressive leader of the base, Josh Stamberg’s Tyler Hayward’s plan is. Vision attempts to escape the hex but begins to disintegrate, something his children in the centre of town sense and alert their mother to. In an attempt to save/stop Vision escaping, Wanda expands the edges of the Hex so it consumes the whole of the base – turning it into a circus, only a few escapes, excluding Darcy.
There are some brilliant moments in this week’s episode. The kids doing their talking-to-camera Malcom in the Middle stuff is hilarious and perfectly executed, and the characters dressed up in cheap versions of their comic book costumes is simply genius – there’s also a lovely flashback of Pietro and Wanda as kids dressed up as Nick Fury and Black Widow. Also Evan Peter’s excels as the man-child uncle who causes all the trouble, he’s been an excellent addition to the show.
The show is definitely getting darker, with the focus of each episode shifting more strongly to the general story arc but I thought that was really well done here with the Halloween setting. The images of whole swathes of people frozen in time was creepy and the conversation Vision was with neighbour Agnes was quite disturbing – signalling how dangerous Wanda is. Also the advert this week – an animation of a kid on an island who starves to death – was the most disturbing of the lot, but so well executed. You cannot deny the immense attention to detail that goes into this show.

We were given little answers and more questions by the end. I’m not 100% sure who this “Pietro” is or whether he’s some sort of plant working against Wanda, maybe coming from her own mind, maybe from S.W.O.R.D. Plus, the prospect of ever stopping Wanda seems further and further away.
While it was always going to be difficult living up to the brilliance of last week cliff-hanger, this is again a strong episode. With that ending, who knows what’s going to happen next week.
