Director Darren Bousman and stars Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols on Spiral: From The Book Of Saw

Fresh out of the blocks for cinema re-openings in England, Scotland and Wales on Monday, 17 May (Northern Ireland movie fans have to wait a week longer) is Spiral:From The Book Of Saw, the latest in the Saw franchise, but with a surprise name as the driving force behind the production.

Director Darren Lynn Bousman returns to the fold, after helming parts 2, 3 and 4 of the series some 14 years ago, this time with Chris Rock in the lead. As brash cop Zeke Banks, he and rookie partner (Max Minghella) are put in charge of a series of grisly murders which are more than reminiscent of others from the past. But, as Zeke discovers, he’s at the centre of the killer’s game, and it’s all about a twisted sense of justice.

Talking to The People’s Movies’ Freda Cooper in the interviews below, Bousman reveals that Chris Rock was the reason for the film being made. The actor/comedian was a fan of the series but felt it would benefit from an injection of humour – and even wrote some of it to give it his trademark style.

Max Minghella, who plays his sidekick Schenk, describes working with Rock and how much he enjoys his comedy, while Marisol Nichols talks about why you wouldn’t mess with her character, Captain Angie Garza, and why she loves playing women in tough jobs.
