Daniel Day-Lewis Is Rethinking Retirement
Daniel Day-Lewis is rethinking his statements on retiring. The Oscar-winning actor sat down with Rolling Stone ahead of the release of Anemone, directed by his son Ronan.
In the interview, a candid Daniel Day-Lewis referred to his 2017 announcement as ‘such grandiose gibberish.’ Before confirming his retirement, the actor starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread (2017), a film that earned its leading man another Oscar nod.
Although he always loved acting, Day-Lewis explained that he couldn’t quite reconcile the ‘aspects of the way of life that went with it.’ After Phantom Thread, it seemed unlikely the actor would return.
But with Anemone, a collaboration with his son, it seems the actor has changed his mind.
This isn’t the first time Day-Lewis has “retired.” The actor stepped away from the spotlight in 1997 to work as a shoemaker’s apprentice. It wasn’t until 2002 that he found his way back to the screen with Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. The 2017 announcement, however, felt final. But Day-Lewis gained some newfound energy thanks to Ronan.
The actor told Rolling Stone: ‘As I get older, it just takes me longer and longer to find my way back to the place where the furnace is burning. But working with Ro, that furnace just lit up. And it was, from beginning to end, just pure joy to spend that time together with him.’
Anemone will make its UK premiere at this year’s BFI London Film Festival.
Anemone will have its premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival before releasing in the U.S. on October 3rd.
