Criterion To Release 4K Restorations of Entire Kubrick Collection
Criterion has announced an exciting new collection of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s 16 films in a new trailer. The collection will include new versions of the director’s thirteen features and three shorts as a 30-disc set, presented in UHD + Blu-ray 4k restoration.
Titles included in the collection are the documentary shorts Day of the Fight (original and RKO version), Flying Padre, Fear and Desire and The Seafarers, as well as Kubrick’s feature filmography (listed in release order) Killer’s Kiss, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, (also titled How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb), 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining (theatrical and international cut), Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut.
The filmmaker’s legendary works are among the most memorable adaptations of books spanning sci-fi, horror, erotica, and tragicomedy. Also featured in the collection are original soundtracks in both original and remastered 5.1 mixes, interview footage totalling around 25 hours, behind-the-scenes content, and annotated documents by Kubrick himself.
The collection reportedly “took two years to achieve“, as shared by Criterion producer Michael Chaiken, “but as Kubrick fans know, one’s relationship with his films never truly ends.”
“It was an honour to be asked to produce this set and an enormous responsibility: to the fans, to the Kubrick estate, and ultimately to Kubrick himself,” Chaiken added. [Kubrick’s] commitment to the presentation of his work remained constant throughout his life.”
Author Jonathan Lethem and film historian Kevin Wynter also appear in the collection’s recorded content as part of a dialogue on the filmmaker’s legacy, alongside filmmaker Lee Unkrich, author Michael Benson and essay author and critic Nathaniel Rich, as names featured in the list of collaborators, experts and studios working together to maintain Kubrick’s artistry surviving “across generations,” as explained by Chaiken.
There is also the on-set documentary Making ‘The Shining’, charting the creation of one of horror’s most influential and recognised creations; never-before-seen screen tests from the making of Lolita featuring James Mason and Sue Lyon; and unseen footage from the making of Full Metal Jacket.
Criterion also designed the collection to fulfil Kubrick’s love and dedication to preservation and research, including securing the numerous important materials outside of practical filmmaking, such as research notes, photography collections, production notes, and annotated/edited scripts.
