He’s been looking the favourite for the past few weeks and now according to IndieWire & Deadline Lars and The Real Girl director Craig Gillespie will be directing PRIDE AND PREJUDICE & ZOMBIES. The movie as expected will be produced by Natalie Portman’s HandsomeCharlie Productions which will be an adaptation of the 2009 seth-Grahame Smith’s novel which takes the classic Jane Austin love story mashing it with some undead loving courtesy of a zombie plague. When you look at it you would think this is a ridicolous hybrid who you could give to any tom, dick or harry but when you make the Oprah Winfrey Show’s summer reading list you have to get a director in who’ll give the book the loving respect of the original classic story who can gently infuse the zombie part in without making it look a total farce so you can see why Lionsgate chose Gillespie.
Lionsgate’s Alli Shearmur says of Gillespie:
“His sensibility spans from genre bending horror to elegant character driven comedy, which is perfect for this movie. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is precisely the kind of movie I came to Lionsgate to make: sophisticated yet youthful and edgy. Our movie will be all of those things – with zombies- and it will benefit enormously from Craig’s unique perspective.”
School of Rock director Mike White had been connected to the movie project for sometime but then dropped out a few months back and since upto a few weeks ago the gossipmill train has been in overdrive until now. I havent seen Lars and the Real Girl but have heard many good things about it so I am really excited now about this as well as curious about Gillespie’s next movie the remake of Fright Night which is due out this September so expect the first trailer to hit the net in the next month or two!
