Brendan Fraser Living A “Lie” In First Trailer For Rental Family
Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for their upcoming drama Rental Family, and you can watch it below!
It’s been a couple of years since Brendan Fraser won the accolades for The Whale. He returns early next year in a lead role with Rental Family, and he’s living a “lie” in Japan. The film is directed by Japanese filmmaker Hikari (Beef), and this looks potentially another potential awards winner. Japan offers a lot to the world, especially when it comes to unique services. In the film, Fraser is a struggling American actor living in Tokyo. Once he lands the unusual job standing in for strangers, he starts to find purpose and make bonds, but is it all a ‘lie’?
This film also stars Takehiro Hira (Shogun), Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Akira Emoto (Lovers Lost, Shin Godzilla, Dr. Akagi) and newcomer Shannon Gorman.
Official Synopsis:
Set against modern-day Tokyo, RENTAL FAMILY follows an American actor (Brendan Fraser) who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.
Rental Family will arrive in UK and Irish cinemas January 2026 (on 21st November in the U.S.).
The film will have its world premiere next month at Toronto International Film Festival.
