Box Office Report: 2026’s Summer Ranks As US’s Highest-Grossing

Summer 2026 will likely go down in film history, thanks to recent box office reports showing this year’s summer is now America’s highest-grossing summer in history. This landmark comes from a US gross of $4.76 billion, topping the previous record holder for the US’s biggest summer at the box office, 2013, by $9 million.

The numbers place last year’s summer at 275 million in admissions, and this year’s topping it by 47 million, with 2026’s summer admissions coming in hot at 322 million. Additionally, 2026 saw its summer as the first on record to have each month reach over $1 billion in ticket sales:

• May: $1.07 billion
• June: $1.08 billion
• July: $1.18 billion
• August: $1.276 billion

The top five highest-grossing summers, and their highest-grossing releases, in US ticket sales are:

1. 2026- $4.765 billion (Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $924 million)
2. 2013-$4.756 billion (Iron Man 3’s $409 million)
3. 2023- $4.039 billion (Barbie’s $636 million)
4. 2024- $3.632 billion (Inside Out 2’s $652 million)
5. 2025- $3.598 billion (Lilo & Stitch’s $423 million)

So how exactly did 2026 end up reigning supreme?

It seems to be a blend of fresh, original ideas from newly mainstream directors, adaptations and sequels of trusted, beloved franchises.

“There were a huge number of non-frequent moviegoers. We don’t see the momentum stopping; the top 15 films we’re tracking for the fall are running an average of 3.5 points ahead the average from the top 15 at the same point in time from last year,” Greenlight Analytics Head, Bill Skelly, shared. “We see no signs of this slowing down. We saw non-frequent moviegoers buying multiple tickets over the summer.”

Joseph M. Singer, Elixir Media co-founder and film financer, listed this summer’s highest-grossing and most acclaimed releases in his explanation as to why 2026’s summer period has seen such immense box office success.

“The marketplace featured Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Obsession, Backrooms, and other successful films,” he stated. “They are not aimed at the same audience. There are tentpole films, animation, horror, those aimed at adults, and original or less conventional movies”.

“A 20-year-old may want Backrooms. A family goes to Toy Story 5. A couple picks The Devil Wears Prada 2. A Christopher Nolan film brings several generations together, and Spider-Man draws an enormous mainstream audience,” Singer added. “Multi-quadrant films have always driven the box office, but a film need not appeal to everyone if the calendar consistently offers something for everyone.”
