Blasphemy! Watch The UK Trailer For Benedetta

Benedetta (2022)

Saints, sinners and naughty nuns, unleash your ‘blasphemous’ side and watch the UK Trailer for Paul Verhoeven‘s Benedetta.

We’ve known since last year’s Cannes Film Festival, boutique distributor MUBI were set to release this film in the UK and Ireland. Thankfully now we are now 2 months away from the release we have the first proper look.

Lust, power and  scandal, the film is based on Judith C. Brown’s 1986 book, Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. Virginie Efira (Elle, In Bed with Victoria, Sibyl) plays our 17th Century titular woman, who experience powerful and sexual visions that brought controversary to the church.

It wouldn’t be a Verhoeven film without some controversary, it’s melodramatic or even make you laugh. It’s certainly going to shock anyone who might be very religious .  Our writer Bradley Hadcroft watched the film giving it a 5 star review calling it “ the most purely entertaining mainstream genre flick of the year“.

Set in the late 17th century and inspired by true events, a woman joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a plague ravages the land that surrounds it. Capable of performing miracles from an early age, Benedetta becomes entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair that will threaten to shake the Church to its core.

The rest of the cast includes Daphne Patakia, Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin, Hervé Pierre, Clotilde Courau, and Guilaine Londez.

Benedetta will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from 15th April, before it heads exclusively to MUBI 1st July. The film will be making one final Festival appearance at Glasgow Film Festival on 7th then 8th March [More info/Book tickets].
