Alden Ehrenreich Joins Michael B. Jordan in Miami Vice '85

Alden Ehrenreich has found his next major film role, with Deadline exclusively revealing that he has joined Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal Pictures’ Miami Vice ’85.

The actor, who picked up his first Tony Award earlier this summer for his acclaimed performance in Becky Shaw, joins an all-star cast and crew.

Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay, which takes audiences back to Miami during the city’s glamorous but corrupt mid-1980s era, while Joseph Kosinski, known for films including Top Gun: Maverick, will direct.

The film offers a fresh take on the classic 1980s drama series, drawing inspiration from its landmark pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and defined the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. Miami Vice ’85 will shoot for IMAX and is scheduled to land in cinemas on May 19, 2028, with production set to begin this year.

Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski will produce the film. Gilroy‘s screenplay is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer previously penned an earlier draft.

Sources told Deadline that Alden Ehrenreich had more than eight offers before choosing Miami Vice ’85. He will next appear opposite Helen Mirren in Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder, which will have its premiere at the 2026 Toronto Film Festival. He will also star opposite Daisy Ridley in The Last Resort, releasing in 2027.

CAA, Linden Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trainer and Klein represent Ehrenriech.
