After the underrated period drama of Mr. Turner, the British director returns to the 1800’s. A dramatized account of Britain’s bloodiest massacre, Peter’s Field Manchester (1819)aka Peterloo Massacre. The city also happens to be the director’s hometown.

Manchester is a centre of the working class rights movement in the UK. Many towns and cities in northern England and Scotland all have a hand in delivering a voice against those who wanted to ‘oppress’. When 60,000 peaceful protesters marching against government oppression. The powers to be only answer to handling the protesters was to fire on them.

A shocking true story which saw 18 people killed and over 600 injured. What came out of this pro-democracy protest, was reforms that slowly gave workers more rights. It was also through this massacre saw birth to one of the country’s daily newspaper’s The Guardian. For decades a paper that was seen as the ‘left-wing’ voice in the UK’s majority right-wing media. Some may now question who they represent today, what will be interesting is how the predominantly right-wing media will react to Peterloo.

An epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protestors were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper.

The film stars Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Tim McInnerny, Christopher Eccleston, Leo Bill, David Bamber.

Peterloo is set for release in the UK and Ireland 2nd November 2018 (9th November in the U.S).
