From highly-anticipated blockbusters to biopics, period dramas to indie films and everything in between, female filmmakers are claiming their spotlight in 2019 and we’re all here for it. Women are levelling the playing field in the industry and making it a more imaginative, diverse, and positive place to make films. From biopics including Mary Queen of Scots to crime dramas like Karyn Kusama’s Destroyer, we’ve compiled our list of most anticipated powerful female-directed films coming to the big screen in 2019.

DESIREE AKHAVAN’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Akhavan’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a moving story of a teenage lesbian sent away to gay conversion camp in the 90’s. The film won the grand jury prize at Sundance film festival in January; which is pretty amazing considering this is only her second feature film. Akhavan’s power to reveal the true feelings of a young girl that doesn’t have an easy path within straight culture makes this film one to watch.

KARYN KUSAMA’s Destroyer

Based on amazing director, Karyn Kusama’s 2015 horror film The Invitation, we’re excited to see her latest vision, Destroyer (out 25th January). The film stars a rough looking Nicole Kidman as a broken-down LAPD detective consumed by guilt and haunted by her past. Thirsty for revenge, she embarks on a mission to take down the gang she infiltrated years ago.

JOSIE ROURK’s Mary Queen of Scots

Josie Rourke directed this historical drama starring Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots and her attempt to wrestle the English throne out from under her cousin, Elizabeth I played by Margot Robbie. This film is full of political intrigue and smart, powerful women doing their best to make their mark in a world where men try to take all the power.

MARIELLE HELLER’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Director Marielle Heller’s new film Can You Ever Forgive Me? follows the true events of biographer, Lee Israel’s life as she slowly slips into criminal activity. Heller handles the story beautifully and the Golden Globe- nominated Melissa McCarthy takes on her desperate character effortlessly.

ANNA BODEN’s Captain Marvel

Not only is this the first Marvel film to star a woman in a lead role, it’s also the first Marvel film to be directed by a woman. Anna Boden, along with her directing partner Ryan Fleck, is known for her gripping documentaries and indie films, so Captain Marvel will be their biggest film to date, and we’re excited to see what comes next.
