Buddy Characters (Blindspotting)

In the new dark comedy, Blindspotting, a parolee named Collin Hodgkins (Daveed Diggs) is struggling to finish the last three days of his probation, especially with his short-tempered best friend Miles (Rafael Casal) always getting him into trouble. After the traumatic experience of witnessing a police shooting, Collin and Miles’ friendship is put to the test. Blindspotting hits cinemas next Friday (5th October) and with this buddy duo soon to be on big screens, we’re looking at some iconic buddy teams in film.

JACK AND REGGIE48 HOURS (1982)

Cop and con buddies team up
This is the film that inspired cop buddy movies of the 80’s and early 90’s. Jack Cates (Nick Nolte), is a by-the-book police officer and he’s out for revenge after a notorious murderer kills several of his comrades. Jack enlists the help of con-man Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) to track down the murderer. The unlikely pair end up making a great team and even better buddies!

VINCENT AND JULESPULP FICTION (1994)

Suit-wearing, hitman duo carries out criminal tasks for their boss
Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar winning film features two cool-as-cucumber hitmen, Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson), under the employ of gangster Marsellus Wallace. The pair finish off random and graphic jobs as four intertwining tales of violence and redemption implode around them.

ANDY AND REDTHE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994)

Inmate buddies form a strong bond
The Shawshank Redemption isn’t your typical buddy film. It features a white banker named Andy (Tim Robbins) who is sent to a maximum-security prison where he meets Red (Morgan Freeman), an inmate with whom he forms a strong bond. During the nineteen years of his imprisonment, the two build a strong friendship, experiencing heartache & brutality. Their friendship is the painstaking story of perseverance of the human spirit and the power of companionship.

AGENTS KAY AND JAYMEN IN BLACK (1997)

FBI agents combine forces to take down extra-terrestrial evil
In an organization dedicated to monitoring paranormal activities and extra-terrestrials on Earth, we see an unlikely pair join forces. Agent Jay, (Will Smith) an awestruck newcomer, and Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), a grizzled veteran come together to take on the alien invasion. This alien fighting FBI agents make for a refreshing twist on the buddy-cop genre.

Best friends embark on a road trip with unforeseen consequences
Eager to get away from their mundane day-to-day lives, Thelma Dickinson (Geena Davis) and Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon) set out on a getaway that eventually turns into the pair running from the law. This female pairing tests the limits of friendship and takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster.

SCHMIDT AND JENKO21 JUMP STREET (2012)

Best friends and underachieving cops go undercover
The hilarious duo Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are offered the opportunity to prove themselves as cops when they join the secret Jump Street unit. Here, they’re assigned a mission to pose as high schoolers to bring down a synthetic drug ring and while they think being a teenager again might be easy, they’re forced to confront the uncomfortable and awkward teenage moments. They’ll need each other to get through high school all over again.
