10 Best Movies About Writing Of All Time

If you are a writer, you have likely searched for movies that represent writers struggling with the same things you deal with on a daily basis. Luckily, there are plenty of them to choose from. I’ve teamed up with writers from UK Writings and others to see which movies have inspired them the most. This is what we’ve come up with. Here is a top ten list of the best movies about writing of all time.

10. Julie and Julia


This is one of the most famous movies about writing. Well, blog writing at least. It’s based on a real-life story of a girl named Julie who dislikes her job and starts blogging and trying out all the recipes from Julia Child’s famous cookbook.

9. The Hours


The Hours is truly a masterpiece of both screenwriting and filming. Each scene makes you feel something for the characters – three women in different time periods – Virginia Woolf, a lesbian housewife reading her book in the ’50s and a modern-day Mrs. Dalloway trying to throw a party for her unwilling friend.

8. Sylvia


`Ever since I watched the movie about Sylvia Plath, I’ve been inspired to explore poetry and try to write some of my own. It’s a heartbreaking story but surely the one that will push many writers to keep writing.’ says Courtney Linley from State Of Writing.

7. Miss Potter


This movie rarely ends up on these lists but it’s one of the most inspiring movies about writing of all time. It’s based on the real-life story of Beatrix Potter, picture book writer who is struggling to find her way in a man’s world and strict societal norms.

6. Midnight in Paris


Midnight in Paris is a lovely depiction of what Golden Ages in Paris were like. You’ll get to meet some of your favorite writers like Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Fitzgerald’s and even Picasso or Dali. Follow this writer’s journey to success by roaming Paris streets at midnight.

5. The Help


This is an amazing film that shows just how impactful writing can be on the people who read it and on the world itself. Skeeter wants to be a writer instead of getting married, she is striving to write something of great importance, and she gets inspired to write about how ‘the help’ is being treated in Mississippi.

4. Finding Forrester


‘Finding Forrester is a story of a recluse writer who one day, after certain events becomes a mentor to a young man struggling to find his voice. It was recommended to me by the writing community of Paper Fellows and I enjoyed it so much. ‘ says fiction writer Christie Matson.

3. Ruby Sparks


Ruby Sparks starts off in the enchanting world that the beginning of the relationship can be but slowly movies to become slightly disturbing as problems arise and the main character has to face a decision of whether to continue to control Ruby or let her go.

2. Bright Star


This beautiful movie focuses on the love story of John Keats and his love, a girl named Fanny Brawne. They send letters to each other and it’s one of the most wonderful and literary seductive pieces of film that there ever was.

1. Shakespeare In Love


This captivating picture tells the tale of Shakespeare and his love for Viola, who dresses up as a man to be able to act. Shakespeare in love is a lovely, witty and funny movie which shows you just how love can inspire you to create great things.
