Young Heartbreak In Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand Of God Trailer

The Hand Of God (2021)

Young heartbreak awaits as Netflix tease with a first Trailer for Paolo Sorrentino‘s The Hand Of God. Next month the acclaimed Italian filmmaker Sorrentino‘s (Il Divo, This Must Be the Place, The Great Beauty, Youth) new film will make it’s world premiere at Venice Film Festival. A story of heartbreak and liberation in 1980’s Naples Italy, Sorrentino’s hometown making this a very personal journey for him.

The name of the film is catching many sites out, some think there is some religious connection. If you know your football, ‘Hand Of God’ was a nickname given to iconic Diego Maradona after his controversial goal against England at World Cup 1986. Off course Maradona did become a legend when he signed for Napoli in the same decade.

The film does look an exploration of emotions, for family and sports. It also feels an celebration of Italian cinema (especially Fellini) too, that good Venice have nominated the film in the ‘Best Film’ category. For a young man of anywhere in the world those two things are very important, a coming of age. For cinephiles potentially something truly special and rewarding.

From Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty), comes the story of a young man’s heartbreak and liberation in 1980s Naples, Italy. The Hand of God follows Fabietto Schisa, an awkward Italian teen whose life and vibrant, eccentric family are suddenly upended—first by the electrifying arrival of soccer legend Diego Maradona and then by a shocking accident from which Maradona inadvertently saves Fabietto, setting his future in motion. Sorrentino returns to his hometown to tell his most personal story, a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss.

The cast includes Filippo Scotti, Toni Servillo, Teresa Saponangelo, Marlon Joubert, Luisa Ranieri, Renato Carpentieri, and Massimiliano Gallo.

The Hand Of God will make it’s World Premiere on 2nd September at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Then from select UK and Cinemas in December, before premiering on Netflix from 15th December.
