Marvel Television’s Wonder Man has been renewed for a second season, with the key creative team behind the project also set to return.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley are expected to return as Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, the super-powered actor and ex-terrorist-thespian around whom the story follows. They are expected to be joined by co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and Andrew Guest (Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Cretton is coming back as director and executive producer, whilst Guest is reprising his role as showrunner and executive producer. Receiving a second season is a rare scenario for Marvel television.

Only two other live-action shows have seen follow-ups, including Loki, which remains Marvel’s top show, and Daredevil: Born Again, whose second season starts this week.

The show premiered on Disney+ in January to exceptional reviews. It currently sits at a 91 per cent critic score and an 87 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In our review, it was described as being “the best that the MCU shows have been since Agatha All Along. It returns to experimenting with its storytelling and editing techniques, making Wonder Man feel like its own show and helping it become a Marvel Spotlight success. Abdul-Mateen II is nuanced in his performance with Simon Williams and is a character that brings so much heart to the show, together with Kingsley, who helps humanise Trevor Slattery after he’s been a joke in his past roles. As things go, this is a great start to the year for Marvel Studios.”

Wonder Man is streaming on Disney+ now.
