It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a flurry of South Korean movies that attract attention worldwide, 2016 is one of those years. Next week Train To Busan will arrive in UK&Ireland, 4 weeks later things will get dark and unsettling when The Wailing arrives. Ahead of that UK release Kaleidoscope Entertainment have released the UK trailer so we can see why Cannes Film Festival got very spooked this year…

Evil is coming in the shape of Na Hong-Jin‘s dark twisted horror thriller police investigation which turns into a sensationally terrifying thriller as a likeable cop is drawn into a nightmarish hunt for a source of pure evil disturbing his quiet, rural village.

In The Wailing , Out of his depth, local police officer Jong-goo(Doo Won Kwak) investigates a spate of killings, as well as an outbreak of madness seemingly connected to the recent arrival of a mysterious Japanese man who resides in the outskirts of the village. Whatโ€™s more, he is horrified to discover his young daughter may have fallen under the strangerโ€™s curse.

Jong-goo calls on a charismatic shaman to free his daughter from the strangerโ€™s dangerous influence, but the shamanโ€™s intense exorcism ritual threatens to worsen the situation… and Jong-goo, with his world collapsing around him, realises he must confront the ultimate evil.

For years the Japanese have been forerunners for Asian horror, past decade South Korea has shown they know how to unleash the horror in something more dark, grittier, very sadistic. I Saw The Devil,Oldboy are perfect examples of revenge horror in the bloodiest way, Bedevilled another good example. However, Korea has shown they can produce Hollywood size creature feature horrors with the 2006 cult hit The Host.

Director Hong-jin is no slouch directing one of the best crime thrillers  The Chaser, The Wailing does look like it has a lot of emotional weight. It also looks like it might just pull on your heart strings with a lot of drama some calling it poetic, what we do know is the ending will rip your soul to pieces. Now that’s our type of movie!

The Wailing will be getting a limited UK cinema release on 25th November with the movie available on Video On Demand the same day. The movie also stars  Jung-min Hwang ,Jun Kunimura,Woo-hee Chun.
