How can you describe this uniquely strange film? You can’t, Border is an mesmerising and genre-defying dark fairytale and MUBI has released the official UK Trailer.
The film surprised many at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, winning the Un Certain Regard top-prize. There’s also the small matter that film is also Sweden’s Oscar Entry at this month’s Ceremony.
The film is based on a story by author John Ajvide Lindqvist. The film brilliantly mixes romance, noir, social realism and supernatural horror to a bold and surprising effect. Wherever its played , its gained a lot of praise especially for its originality and refreshing approach.
The film tells the story of Tina and Airport Border Security Agent who has a great sense of smell. Smelling the emotions of humans , but its a talent that leaves her lonely. That all changes when a mysterious man whom she feels is hiding something only to learn the pair are more connected than they first thought.
It’s a film that embraces been different, at the same it highlights the intolerance and hostility toward refugees and immigrants. Excited? Oh Yes!
Customs officer Tina is known for her extraordinary sense of smell. It’s almost as if she can sniff out the guilt on anyone hiding something. But when Vore, a suspicious-looking man, walks past her, her abilities are challenged for the first time ever. Tina can sense Vore is hiding something she can’t identify. Even worse, she feels a strange attraction to him. As Tina develops a special bond with Vore and discovers his true identity, she also realizes the truth about herself. Tina, like Vore, does not belong to this world. Her entire existence has been a lie and now she has to choose: keep living the lie or embrace Vore’s terrifying revelations.
The film stars Eva Melander, Eero Milonoff, with Ali Abbasi directing.
Border will be released in UK and Irish Cinemas from 8th March. There is a few upcoming preview screenings at Glasgow Film Festival on 22nd and 23rd February [ more info / Book Tickets].
