Les Misérables (2019)

Paris will be burning next month when Ladj Ly’s acclaimed thriller Les Misérables finally arrives in UK cinemas. Today Altitude Films have unveiled the film’s UK Trailer a film that tackles violence and class conflict.

The film is the directorial debut for Ly and you maybe wondering what does this film have to do with the classical Victor Hugo book of the same name? It’s set in the district the book was set in suburbs of Paris. A woman joins an anti crime squad who quickly learns the tensions between the police and the local population.

You can clearly see the cult French thriller La Haine has inspired this one, which ironically gets a UK re-release a week after this one. This resonates highly with whats going on in the world today protest, violence and Police brutality. Whilst the USA was seen as ground zero for racism and the killing of Floyd, France has been no stranger to the troubles over the years, Making this film explosive and compelling watch.

Inspired by the 2005 Paris riots, director Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated LES MISÉRABLES is a hugely topical provocative insight into the tensions between neighbourhood residents and police.

Stéphane (Damien Bonnard) has recently joined the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil, in the suburbs of Paris, France, where, Victor Hugo set his famed novel “Les Misérables”. Alongside his new colleagues Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga) – both experienced members of the team – he quickly discovers tensions running high between local gangs. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures the encounter, threatening to expose the reality of everyday life.

Starring Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti, Djibril Zonga, Issa Perica, Al-Hassan Ly, Steve Tientcheu, Almamy Kanoute, and Jeanne Balibar.

Les Misérables will then be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 4th September.
