Monster film fans and literature buffs have just been given a closer look into The Bride!, the latest adaptation of Gothic literature icon Mary Shelley’s genre-creating masterpiece, Frankenstein, the modern Prometheus. The film will be the second directed feature from actor-turned filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal and has a star-studded cast comprised of  Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s brother Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. 

This film marks the second collaboration between Gyllenhaal and Buckley.

Coming in as a hybrid between an adaptation of the original 1818 prose and as a re-telling of James Whale’s 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lancaster), The Bride! is scheduled for an early March release. This will be just three months after the Gothic maestro Guillermo del Toro directed Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth in his own vision of Shelley’s dark tale of men playing God and running from the consequences. 

Synopsis | While the most recent adaptation donned the book’s dark Regency era in the UK, Gyllenhaal’s take on the story will be something original as it’s centred in a dark 1930s Chicago. Audiences will witness Bening’s Dr Euphronious and Bale’s Frankenstein’s Creature take the corpse of a murdered woman (Buckley’s The Bride) and reanimate her to fulfil the Creature’s yearning for a companion who understands the pain of immortality and societal neglect. The pair take to the streets to cause uproar; such acts capture the interest of the local police and threaten to pluck at and unravel social order at the seams. 

Death, science, madness, suspicion and romance all blend as one in the latest trailer, showcasing some dazzling visual style, eccentric costuming and fiery performances. Florence Welch lends her vocals to amplify the tone in a re-vamp of her hit Everybody Screams. There are hints of a slight ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ spin as well. Everything sparks on the screen brighter and more energetic than the ones that brought The Bride back from the dead. 

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! will hit UK cinemas on 6th March this year!
