What We Do In The Shadows was an cult indie hit for New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi proven he’s a force to be reckon with in film. Disney recognised that talent and beside working on Moana he’s currently working on Thor: Ragnarok then we have the wonderful off beat charming Hunt For Wilderpeople. Check out the UK Trailer…
Already a box-office hit in it’s native New Zealand as well as neighbouring Australia by the time the film arrived at Sundance film festival this year. Now next month one of the most talked about independent films of 2016 will finally be arriving in UK&Irish cinemas aiming to win our hearts!
Ricky, a defiant young city kid, finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle in the wild New Zealand bush after a series of misadventures befall the unlikely duo. A national manhunt ensues, and the two are forced to put aside their differences and work together in this hilarious and heartfelt adventure.
Based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, the film is written and directed by famed indie auteur Taika Waititi (What we do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarax) and stars Sam Neill (The Daughter, Long Way Down) and introduces rising star Julian Dennison.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is the highest-grossing locally-produced film of all time and smashed box office records for highest-grossing opening weekend and highest-grossing first week following its phenomenal reception at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
No where do we start? We caught the movie at it’s European Premiere in June at Edinburgh Film Festival with our writer Andrew describing the film as “a majestic piece of cinema. Refreshingly original, filled with charm and good spirits and performances which amuse and touch. It’s a modern classic.”. Even our sister site Cinehouse covered the film too, with writer Scott describing it as “hilarious, bombastic, odd-couple adventure“. Waititi’s absurd humour certainly shinning through and a film with a big heart proving there is life and real talent outside of Hollywood. Now we cant wait for that ‘intergalactic buddy road movie’ called Thor:Ragnarok can you?
Check out the film’s poster below and we’re on it too!!! Well Done Andrew (&Scott!).
Hunt For Wilderpeople is been released by Vertigo in UK&Ireland from 16th September.
