They control everything but one group of journalists  Spotlight who dared to expose them, The Catholic Church in one of the greatest scandals for the church. This Friday the 6 time nominated film will arrive in UK cinemas, tonight we get a look at a new TV Spot highlighting why this film is a must see this weekend.

Monday (25th) I had the privilege of watching this film , a film which I knew existed but very little about. Ironically my scenario is like the basis of Spotlight‘s story, the exposing the Catholic Church’s systematic cover-up of widespread pedophilia perpetrated by more than 70 Boston area priests. It’s actually a news story I can remember as it shocked the world not just America, helping to open doors to victims all around the world including the UK and Ireland.

Spotlight tells the astonishing true story of the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Spotlight”, a team of investigative journalists, who in 2002 shocked the city and the world by exposing the Catholic Church’s systematic cover-up of widespread pedophilia perpetrated by more than 70 local priests. As the team pursue the release of sealed court records that will expose everything , it becomes clear that the Church’s systematic protection of predatory priests is far more wide-reaching than any of them ever imagined. Despite staunch resistance from Church officials, the Globe publishes its blockbuster exposé in January 2002, leading the way for similar revelations in more than 200 other cities around the world.

We all tend to reserve judgement on certain films when they receive accolades before we see the film and Spotlight is one of the most powerful dramas you’ll see in 2016. There is no graphic scenes however actors playing the victims do tell all, which may crawl under your skin most of all open your eyes. To me that is a film worthy of any accolades and many would not be entirely shocked if it wins best film at next month’s Oscars.
