Since Carol, Todd Haynes status has risen to seismic proportions in mainstream cinema after making a name for himself in independent Cinema. Back in the summer, his next movie Wonderstruck made its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival to mesmerizing reviews.
Today Studiocanal kick off the movies UK campaign by releasing a ‘first look‘ clip in which we meet our lead child actors, Ben and Rose. This may sound nothing special but as you’ll see they are 50 years apart but mirrored actions…
Based on Brian Selznick’s critically acclaimed novel Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry.
Despite our critical appraise for Carol, personally, I wasn’t the movies greatest fan, nor did I hate the movie. For Wonderstruck I am liking what I’m seeing, 2 eras 2 kids but asymmetry a curiousity and desire to connect. The score and cinematography are superb too capturing the different eras superbly. This is a family movie and Todd Haynes first foray into sub-genre and with reviews backing up that first step a success, we can expect more from him!
Wonderstruck doesn’t have the exact UK and Irish release date apart from it will be out 2018 (USA 20th October). Starring Julianne Moore, Oakes Fegley, Michelle Williams and Millicent Simmonds.
