Kenneth Branagh’s live-action take on the classic Disney animation Cinderella is only a few weeks away from being released, and to heighten the excitement a new clip showcasing Cate Blanchett as the Evil Stepmother has been released.
Rather than an updated, modern version, the film follows the classic story, with Blanchett playing Cinderella’s (Lily James) father’s second wife, Lady Tremaine. After her father dies, Cinderella is forced into a life of serving on her stepmother and boorish step sisters, until one day she has a chance encounter with the handsome Prince Charming (Richard Madden) on a ride in the woods. With the help of a pumpkin, a Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham-Carter), and a pair of glass slippers, Cinderella can finally escape the life of servitude her evil stepmother has forced upon her.
I was fortunate enough to catch a screening of Cinderella at this year’s Berlinale (you can read my review here), and I have to say that Cate Blanchett was the best part of the film, stealing the show whenever she was on-screen. Part of the reason is that she looked to have so much fun playing Lady Tremaine, a fact in which she expands on in the below clip –
You can catch the delightful wickedness of Blanchett as Lady Tremaine in UK cinemas on 27th March.
