Walt Disney Movies Revisted – Alice In Wonderland (1951)
Based on the beloved children’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this delightful animated film was one of Disney’s most rewarding films. Although the film was not a great success at the box office, it was successful enough to stop the studio going under. And with the help of some re-releases in the late 50’s and 60’s the film found it’s audience.
However Walt Disney did not give up hope, during the late 40’s Disney’s animators began the development on two children’s favours Cinderella (1950) and Alice in Wonderland (1951) At this point due to strikes and budget issues he had his usual team of animators, who would usually all work on one production were split into two teams to develop the next two magical Disney films.
The second of the two was Alice in Wonderland. This has to be one of my favourite Disney films as I have fond memories of watching it as a child so it has a close place in my heart.
It follows the main story of the original novel, though in the research I discovered that Disney used elements from Lewis Carols follow up novel Alice Through The looking Glass. This was something I did not know until recently.
The film follows Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) a young girl with a wild imagination, who stumbles across a rabbit hole that takes her to the magical land of wonderland, there she meets some interesting characters and gets into all sorts of trouble.
This is a film I adore and I was so excited when seeing the 2010 live action version also from Disney. This version (1951) is one that is great for the entire family. I highly recommend that you check this one out if you have not already.
