Two men make snow angels in Mayday

Apple Original Films has released the first trailer for Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

The film is described as a โ€œgenre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head.โ€ย

Mayday sees โ€œhot-shot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy โ€œAssassinโ€ Kelly (Reynolds) who is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War; the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks heโ€™s toast – but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troyโ€™s rescue, and a bond neither saw coming?โ€

The film is written and directed by filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The pair have directed all of their respective films together, with hits such as Game Night, Vacation, and a live-action adaptation of the famous tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves.

Speaking on the film, the duo said, โ€œThe buddy films of the 1980s were a bizarre and enticing blend of humour, danger and genuine heart. Mayday is our ode to this genre, with the unlikely pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh in a Cold War adventure that explores what it means to be patriotic, but ultimately what it means to be human.โ€

It is being produced by Skydanceโ€™s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, and Maximum Effortโ€™s Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau. Ryan Reynolds takes up a spot on the executive producers’ billing, alongside George Dewey and John G. Scotti.

Mayday will premiere globally on Apple TV on September 4th.
