Tomb Raider: Sophie Turner Confirmed As Lara Croft
Prime Video’s Tomb Raider live-action series is officially moving forward to production, and Sophie Turner, who was testing for Lara Croft in November, has been confirmed for the high-profile role.
The news comes almost three years after word first emerged that Fleabag and Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been signed on to write a Tomb Raider TV series under her overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The series was then officially greenlit in May 2024, with Turner identified as a potential lead six months later. Months of no updates, then followed by speculation about creative issues on the series appearing online after the show reportedly went through two sets of writers’ rooms. Chad Hodge, creator of such series as Wayward Pines and Good Behavior, was then brought in as a consultant in May, after the second writers’ room had wrapped, which led to his appointment as executive producer and co-showrunner, alongside Waller-Bridge.
Waller-Bridge was quoted as saying, “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and is as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artefacts out… Croft is coming…”
Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, then added, “Lara Croft is one of the most recognisable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life, who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve”.
The announcement also revealed Sophie Turner is “thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft” – “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
The series has set 19th January as the start of production date and will be based on the popular video game franchise, which follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft (Turner).
