Peter Parker sits on the edge of a skyscraper reading his text messeges

Actorย Tom Holland sat down in a recent interview withย Amy Poehlerย on her Good Hang podcast to discuss the writing development and changes towards the script for Spider-Man: Brand New Day,ย the upcoming 38th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fourth contribution to the MCU’s Spider-Man series, based on the comic book character of the same name.

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, follows the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Peter Parker choose to wipe his loved ones’ memories of him and his alias Spider-Man to save the multiverse. The other films in the MCU Spider-Man series are Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-Man: Brand New Dayย will focus on Peter Parker dealing with the fallout of the previous film, as well as combating a new threat and a bizarre development to his powers. Holland shared ahead of the film’s release that a needed rewrite came from screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes,ย who holds credits on Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of the William S. Burroughs book Queer and Guadagnino’sย sports romance Challengers.

“I said [to co-star Zendaya], ‘Do you think that this scene is working?’ And she was like, ‘No, I don’t think this scene is working at all,” Holland explained. “So, I then went to the producers and asked, ‘Do you think the scene is working?’ And they said, ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, [we] are really not feeling it.'”

The star then revealed he “….sat down with Destin and said, ‘Hey, man, listen, I know we’ve been shooting for hours, and I hate to tell you this, but I just don’t think that this scene is working. We’re not feeling it in the moment.'”

Holland also shared that “What [he loves] about Destin is that he’s so calm. There’s nothing that could throw him off, and he just listened, sat down, and said, ‘Well, what is it that you’re trying to feel?'”

“I told him, and he went, ‘Yeah, you’re right. That’s exactly what we need to be feeling.’ So, he just said to the crew, ‘Everyone can go home.’ We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to rewrite this scene with the writer, Justin, who was such a talent,” the actor elaborates. “And we came in the next day, we reshot the scene, and I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie. It really does.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Dayย hits cinemas on July 31st.
