Tom Holland Confirms Jean Grey Isn’t In Brand New Day
Spidey star confirms Stranger Things actor won't be appearing as X-Men member Jean Grey
Changing timelines and reboots in comic book adaptations generate ongoing waves of online speculation and fan theories about new casting of classic superhero characters, with one whirlpool of surmise seeing MCU fans suspect Sadie Sink’s portrayal of X-Men’s Jean Grey, a casting choice rumoured since 2024, will make a debut in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which Sink is credited in under an unnamed role. However, star Tom Holland has thrown a spanner in the works with this theory.
An MCU version of the mutant team of superheroes is reportedly in the works, with Jake Schreier serving as director and Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo collaborating on a script initially penned by Michael Lesslie. It will see a cast of younger actors appearing as the X-Men, following FOX’s film series which began in 2000 and saw a spin-off prequel series beginning in 2011.
Despite ongoing whispers that Stranger Things star Sink will appear as team member Jean Grey, a telepathic founding member of the X-Men previously played onscreen by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner, alongside the MCU’s Spider-Man, Holland took to a recent sit-down to confirm that“She [Jean Grey] is not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool.”

An additional interview saw the actor reveal this Spidey installment is on the heavier side: “It’s very sad. I don’t know if it’s the best selling point of the movie…but it’s cathartic…but then also devastating.”
Director Destin Daniel Cretton provided further clarification on changes with the film’s plot, revealing that a sequence which saw a large group of villains join for one mass fight scene didn’t make it off the cutting room floor.
“There was a whole other scene that ended up getting cut from the movie, that we were going to throw a WHOLE BUNCH of villains into one giant fight scene that ended up getting cut,” the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director shared. “We were looking at a lot of the old classics; it was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them. Maybe for another one, we’ll bring them back.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas on 31st July.
