The Criterion Collection UK September Slate Will Be ‘Historical’
Summer is here and we can say it’s been indifferent for many reasons. In September at The Criterion Collection with a little help from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, will be ‘historical’.
26th September is the date for your diaries with comes THE GREAT DICTATOR, Charlie Chaplin‘s masterpiece offers a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona.
Next up BUCK AND THE PREACHER, Sidney Poitier’s rousingly entertaining directorial debut helped rewrite the history of the western bringing black heroes to the genre in which they had always been underrepresented.
Finally, a startling and courageous film, Peter Davisโ landmark 1974 Vietnam documentary HEARTS AND MINDS.
THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) COMEDY, DRAMA
In his notorious masterpiece The Great Dictator, CHARLIE CHAPLIN (City Lights, Modern Times) offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin (in his first pure talkie) brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish โTomanianโ dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring JACK OAKIE (Thievesโ Highway, Lover Come Back) and PAULETTE GODDARD (Modern Times, The Women) in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the
fascist leader before the U.S.โs official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplinโs famously impassioned plea for tolerance.

BUCK AND THE PREACHER(1972) WESTERN, DRAMA
With his rousingly entertaining directorial debut, SIDNEY POITIER (Guess Whoโs Coming to Dinner) helped rewrite the history of the western, bringing Black heroes to a genre in which they had always been sorely underrepresented. Combining boisterous buddy comedy with blistering, Black Powerโera political fury, Poitier and a marvellously mischievous HARRY BELAFONTE (Carmen Jones) star as a tough and taciturn wagon master
and an unscrupulous, pistol-packing โpreacher,โ who join forces in order to take on the white bounty hunters threatening a westward-bound caravan of recently freed enslaved people. A superbly crafted revisionist landmark, Buck and the Preacher subverts Hollywood conventions at every turn and reclaims the western genre in the name of Black liberation.
