The Chronicle Film Podcast Episode 72: Primetime Review – Robert Pattinson Enters the Dark World of Reality TV

A man chats to someone on a plane in Primetime

Fellow Chroniclers, another episode of your favourite film podcast, The Chronicle, has dropped online! For Episode 72, Paul is joined by Bradley and Ibrahim as they invite you down the dark rabbit hole of Primetime.

First up, smile – you’re on camera! We turn our attention to Lance Oppenheim‘s Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson. Our leading man is no stranger to fighting crime, having previously donned the cape and cowl as Batman. This time, however, he’s on the hunt for a very different kind of predator.

Stepping back into the early days of reality television, Primetime takes inspiration from NBC journalist Chris Hansen, who became the face of the controversial television series To Catch a Predator.

Back in the early noughties, the network pushed the show into the primetime slot, going head-to-head with rival channel ABC’s hit series Lost. Alongside his pessimistic producer Andi, the team pushes the show to increasingly uncomfortable limits. Meanwhile, new decoy Dan (Skyler Gisondo), a struggling actor, is brought into the operation. But will their increasingly provocative approach deliver the ratings they desperately need?

It’s a fascinating look at the world of reality television, sensationalist journalism and the murky boundaries between entertainment and exploitation.

But there’s one burning question this film leaves us asking: who is the real ‘predator’ in Primetime?

Find out what Paul, Bradley and Ibrahim make of Lance Oppenheim‘s film in Episode 72 of The Chronicle Film Podcast.
