The Boyfriend Set At Amazon MGM Studios

Follows the Olivia Cooke-Robin Wright seris The Girlfriend, but not a sequel

Olivia Cooke and Robin Wright star in The Girlfriend

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios are developing a sequel series to its popular miniseries The Girlfriend.

The reports say that the show will be an entirely standalone story, with new characters based around themes of masculinity. Talks are continuing with writers, though no scribe is yet attached, but Amazon MGM Studios has declined to comment so far. The Girlfriend – which you can read our review of here – launched in September 2025 and was a major hit for Prime Video, amassing more than 25 million views and becoming the top new series on the streamer in the UK.

We were fortunate enough to review the show when it first came out giving it a three and a half star rating. With Josh Barton describing the show asan entertaining affairwith the two leads, Wright and Cooke ‘throwing themselves into the shenanigans, the former even directing some episodes, their game of cat and mouse is hard to take your eyes off.

The show was based on Michelle Francesโ€™ novel of the same name and stars Olivia Cooke, Robin Wright and Laurie Davidson, the latter two of whom recently dropped by the Deadline Studio at the time to talk about the show. Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios were the producers, with Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher adapting the book for TV.

The Girlfriend is now streaming on Prime Video.
