Sydney Sweeney Gives Update On Edgar Wright’s Barbarella Remake

In a conversation with ScreenRant (via ComingSoon), Sydney Sweeney gave a brief update on Edgar Wright‘s long-awaited remake of the cult sci-fi classic, Barbarella. Sweeney’s involvement in the project was announced in 2022, with news of Wright stepping in as director breaking in 2024. No further news on the project has surfaced since these announcements.
When speaking with ScreenRant on the upcoming remake, Sweeney said, “I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script. I can’t say too much, but it’s really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process. I don’t think people realise how long some things can take, but it’s gonna be worth the wait.”
The plot is currently under wraps, with Sweeney being the only cast member attached to the project at this time. Released in 1968, the original Barbarella, which was an adaptation of the French comic series by Jean-Claude Forest, was directed by Roger Vadim and starred Jane Fonda in the title role.
According to a description of the original movie, the story revolves around a space adventurer called Barbarella, who was sent by the president of Earth to retrieve a missing scientist, crash-lands on a planet and explores its strange customs after a man rescues her from captivity.
Edgar Wright is working on an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man starring Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and Colman Domingo, which is currently set to be released in US cinemas on November 7, 2025. Sweeney’s upcoming projects include Eden, directed by Ron Howard and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, as well as a biopic on female boxer Christy Martin.
