Superman sequel testing actresses for Maxima role

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is reportedly getting closer to casting another key role in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

Deadline reports actresses among those now testing for the role of Maxima include Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies), Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), and Adria Arjona (Andor).

The character Maxima is a warrior queen from the planet Almerac who arrives on Earth in search of a mate and becomes obsessed with Superman. She was first introduced in Action Comics #645 in 1990, created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez.

Maxima has been depicted in live-action television by Charlotte Sullivan in Smallville and Eve Torres Gracie in Supergirl. The character has also been featured in several animated series, including Superman: The Animated Series.

Whoever lands the role will join the Man of Tomorrow cast led by the returning David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor). Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), and Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) are also expected to reprise their roles.

In the sequel, Superman and Lex Luthor are said to be joining forces to combat the technological alien threat Brainiac, portrayed by new cast member Lars Eidinger. Also new to the cast is Aaron Pierre, reprising his role of John Stewart/Green Lantern from the upcoming HBO series Lanterns.

Man of Tomorrow is James Gunn’s follow-up to last summer’s Superman, which grossed $618 million worldwide and launched the new DC cinematic universe. Gunn is back writing and directing the sequel, with production expected to start this month in Atlanta.

The film is set to release on July 9th, 2027.
