Sunday Short Theatre – Alex (2021)
No matter when, we will always will be moments in our lives we have to deal with trauma. That might be once , more likely be more than once we will deal with it and how we deal with it that’s up to you. In this weeks Sunday Short Theatre Alex, our titular character deals with trauma thanks to dance.
As I said in the previously what traumatise us and what we do to deal with it will differ. This experimental 9 minute short film from Italian filmmaker and photographer Luca Spreafico. Alex is traumatised thanks to abandonment during her childhood, the experience was cert to follow her into adulthood. She confronts these issues through of spontaneous dancing at a therapy sessions hoping to release it forever.
The film doesn’t play to the norms of a stereotypical film. Yes it’s a fashion film, it’s also a short film as much as it’s a dance video. The look of the film is equally important the fashion heling the narrative with Italian label Kappe by Federica Bonifaci, collaborating on the film. The titular role is played by dancer Silvia Bonavigo and this film is a change of direction in filmmaking for Spearfico. Exploring the more narrative soul of fashion film while staying true to the genre’s strong focus on aesthetics. Inspired by EMDR therapy, the film looks at abandonment during childhood as something that is likely to accompany us into adulthood. Through an experimental, movement-led approach, Alex takes us on a journey into the human psyche.
