Starsky & Hutch’s David Soul Sadly Died Aged 80
People will know him as Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson along side next to Paul Michael Glaser’s Detective David Starsky in Starsky & Hutch. Sadly today the star of that iconic television show, David Soul has passed away aged 80.
The news of the actor singer’s death was confirmed by his wife Helen Snell. She confirmed her husband passed away yesterday 4th January, here’s the official statement she released… “David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – died yesterday (4 January) after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family.
He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.
His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”
Soul was born Chicago, Illinois, USA on 28 August 1943. After graduating from school in South Dakota to Augustana College, the same place his father, a Lutheran minister who also taught at the college. It was when his family moved to Mexico, David picked up the guitar his first steps to becoming a musician.
His steps into acting came in the 1960s as part of Firehouse Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1966 he moved to Los Angeles he picked up guest roles including Star Trek, Streets of San Francisco, Here Comes The Brides (1968 to 1970).
It was in 1975 is when he would make his big breakthrough with Starsky & Hutch. He would reprise the role in a cameo in the cinematic version in 2004 with Glaser. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson the titular leads in this film.
David Soul would also star in the Television horror mini series based on Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot next to screen legend James Mason. The 1980’s was a little tougher for the actor personally, he did star in The Yellow Rose next to Cybill Sheppard and Sam Eliot.
He did also star in several films with Dirty Harry sequel Magnum Force most notable. The film celebrated it’s 50th anniversary last year.
His music career saw him start as a folk singer who would open for the likes of Frank Zappa, and The Byrds. It was the 1970s at the height of his career when he released several hit songs with Don’t Give Up on Us and Silver Lady.
In 2010 he would marry Helen Snell in the UK after both starred a stage play. David Soul had six children, Rest In Peace.
