Sony Confirm A Venom Animated Film; Directors Found, Tom Hardy To Produce

Venom set to get animated treatment

There will be a new animated Venom movie directed by horror filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

It has also been reported that Tom Hardy will work as a producer for the Sony film. Hardy starred in the three live-action films as Eddie Brock, the everyday citizen who finds himself combined with the extraterrestrial symbiote, resulting in the creation of anti-hero Venom, a dual life form with superpowers.

The first Venom film was released in 2018 by director Ruben Fleischer and writers Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel. The film focused on Brock and Venomโ€™s origin and featured additional cast members Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Scott Haze. It grossed $856.1 million against a $116 million budget.

It was then followed by 2021โ€™s Venom: Let There Be Carnage and concluded in 2024 with Venom: The Last Dance. The sequels saw steady drops in box office success, with the second film earning $506.8 million and the third grossing $478.9 million.

Venom, as a character, was created in 1988 by Bill Michelinie and Todd McFarlane as a villain to the iconic Spider-Man, appearing in issue 300 of the original Amazing Spider-Man comics. He was then given his own comic in 1993 before making his first on-screen appearance in 2007โ€™s Spider-Man 3 by Sam Raimi, despite the filmmaker not being the characterโ€™s biggest fan.

Meanwhile, Lipovsky and Stein previously added to the Final Destination horror franchise with 2025โ€™s Bloodlines. Lipovsky is also due to direct a 2027 installment to the Gremlin film franchise.

Sony has yet to confirm the writers attached to the project, and there are no confirmed or even hints at a plot. The animation process is suspected to take needed time, with previous successful releases such as Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Into the Spider-Verse films serving as key examples for how to make a successful, artistic animated comic book adaptation.
