From elite musical college to a homage of the musicals of days gone by, La La Land sees Gosling crooning like Sinatra and dancing like Gene Kelly….

La La Land tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

It may not capture the full magic of the musicals of the late 1940’s and 1950’s, but La La Land looks like it will do it’s best to pay respects to the era. It has it’s contemporary twists but the big songs, dance moves are there, it’s a little whimsical at times it’s genuinely doing it’s best to be authentic as possible to be a musical. Before I started my current voluntary job at my local indie/arthouse cinema I probably wouldn’t have bothered, but my time there (nearly 5 years)I’ve grown to appreciate Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, many of the old classic actors.

Chazelle looks to have created aesthetically pleasing film, with great fantastic actors despite the blimp with Gangster squad have built a solid on screen chemistry that works nicely here. It’s also the first time Goslin has sung since Blue Valentine. This looks visually amazing and if it lives upto its promise of an array of different musical styles, this may become one of the anticipated films for 2017.
