September At MUBI Will Have Modern Lovers And Millennial Meltdowns

For August it’s been wet wet wet! Will September bring some sunshine? At MUBI they will be hoping they’ll be a ray of sunshine with modern lovers.

Next month themed collections will come to the platform. From raw, experimental film from Zia Anger, modern love from Monia Chokri and Gaspar Noé.

MUBI RELEASE: MY FIRST FILM

From writer-director Zia Anger comes a raw, experimental multimedia portrait of a young filmmaker that redefines the boundaries of visual storytelling: My First Film (2024).

A sincere cinematic ode to the creative process, My First Film follows Vita (Odessa Young), an inexperienced young filmmaker, as she recounts her turbulent foray into filmmaking 15 years prior. A semi-autobiographical feature starring her best friend Dina (Devon Ross), the lawless production reaches a fever pitch when an unexpected pregnancy thrusts the director into the role of creator in ways beyond the film itself.

From the visionary mind of Tarsem Singh comes The Fall (2006), an audacious fusion of epic fantasy and intimate drama about the power of imagination starring a then-unknown Lee Pace. Filmed over a period of four years across 24 countries, each frame is a work of art in this revived cult classic, newly restored in 4K.

In 1920s Los Angeles, a bedridden stuntman spins an elaborate, fantastical tale for a young girl as they both recover from accidents in a hospital. As the girl’s imagination blends with the stuntman’s story, the lines between reality and fantasy blur to reveal an escapist sanctuary for their emotional wounds.

LATEST & GREATEST: THE NATURE OF LOVE

Monia Chokri’s Québécois-based The Nature of Love (2023) follows Sophia, a middle-aged philosophy professor who lived peacefully with her partner Xavier for over ten years. Upon inviting a craftsman, Sylvain into her home for renovations, Sophia’s foundations are shaken to their core, and she is forced to contend with unabating pangs of passion never felt prior.

Winner of 2023’s Best Foreign Film at the César Awards, Chokri’s exploration of sexuality is an unjudging account of how passion often works against our esteemed intellectual faculties.

The wonders and complexities of loving in the modern age are pondered upon in our Modern Lovers collection: Sebastián Lelio’s Gloria (2013) follows an ageing Chilean divorcée who refuses loneliness and ardently seeks love amongst a shaky political backdrop, while the French maverick Gaspar Noé applies his transgressive form to Love (2015), an unveiling account of passion and sex via the perspective of an American, Murphy (Karl Glusman) in Paris and his complicated relationships with the women who orbit his life.

NOT JUST A GIRL

The shrewd resilience of young women is celebrated in our Not Just a Girl collection; a series spotlighting the trials and tribulations of women as they navigate the patriarchal systems of the world they live in. Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize-winner Fish Tank (2009) follows recalcitrant teenager Mia seeking self-fulfilment in dance, all the while she must contend with the complicated feelings that arise after her mum’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender) enters the picture.

In Kitty Green’s The Assistant (2019), aspiring film producer Jane (Julia Garner) lands a job working for an influential figure in the entertainment industry but becomes increasingly vigilant of the stealthy abuse being inflicted by him. RISKY BUSINESS: TWO BY LYNN SHELTON

Enter the irreverent world of the late Lynn Shelton with the uproarious Humpday (2009), the mumblecore comedy which finds two old college friends reuniting after many years apart, only maturity has not removed their sprightly obsession with one-upping each other.
