Sabrina Carpenter to Star in Universal’s Alice in Wonderland Musical
Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is set to lead and produce an untitled musical film for Universal Pictures, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
This follows her recent successes in music, including six Grammy nominations for her seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend.
While Carpenter has acted previously in films like Work It, Emergency, and The Hate U Give, this project will mark her debut as the frontwoman of a major studio movie. She also recently signed on to guest star in a Muppet Show special for Disney Plus.
According to Deadline, this untitled project has been written and will be directed by Lorene Scafaria, who has previously been at the helm of Hustlers and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. She has also directed some episodes of Succession and New Girl.
Scafaria is also set to direct Jonty, an A24 comedy, which will star Jesse Plemons and Cole Escola.
Producers are Marc Platt, of Marc Platt productions, which is releasing Wicked: For Good this month, and Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment. They will work alongside Carpenter, who is also producing the film.
Alice in Wonderland has always been closely associated with Disney, which put out the 1951 animated film and two live-action features in the 2010s. However, the original novel these are based on is in the public domain.
