Ryan Gosling Gives Update On Ghost Rider Rumours
During the promotion for his latest onscreen appearance in the Andy Weir book adaptation Project Hail Mary, by filmmaker duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, actor Ryan Gosling has taken some time to address the rumors he may be starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on Ghost Rider.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk to Josh Horowitz about his latest sci-fi appearance, the actor approached the topic of where the potential Ghost Rider update film is.
“Weโll keep hope alive,” the star replied. โSome discussions have been had. Itโs a complicated situation.โ
The star expressed interest in taking the role on the podcast in 2022. ย This statement was then followed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stating, โGoslingโs unbelievable.”
“Ryan is amazingโฆIโd love to find a place for him in the MCU,” the president added. “Heโs dressed up as Ken on Venice Beach and gets more press than giant movies coming out that weekend. Itโs amazing.โ
Ghost Rider is an alias given to several anti-heroes throughout the Marvel comics universe, the first possessor of the identity given to motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who takes the alias following a deal with Satan (Mephisto) to save his foster father. The character’s many abilities include time and hellfire manipulation, immortality, and a deadly penance stare.
The first Ghost Rider film adaptation came in 2007 by writer and director Mark Steven Johnson, starring Nicholas Cage as Blaze/Ghost Rider. The 2007 superhero film also starred Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Sam Elliott, Donal Logue, Matt Long, and Peter Fonda, and grossed $228.7 million against a $120 million budget.
In 2011, a sequel titled Ghost Rider: Tale of Vengeance was released by filmmaking duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, with Cage reprising his role as as bike-wielding HellKing. Interestingly, Ghost Rider star Mendes has been in a relationship with Gosling since 2011, a tie that was brought up during Gosling’s pod interview discussing rumours of his own casting in a reimagining of the comic character.
“Iโm just happy one of us got to do it,” Gosling smiled.
The actor is also due to appear in Star Wars: Starfighter next summer for Shaun Levy.
Project Hail Mary is currently in cinemas.
