Been destructive in cinematic terms is in Roland Emmerich’s blood, he just loves to destroy our lovely blue planet be it Alien Invaders in Independence Day, rampaging giant Japanese monsters in Godzilla to freezing to death with natural apocalypse in Day After Tomorrow or end of the world when Mayan prophecies come true in 2012. For the German directors latest wave of cinematic destruction he turns his attention not to destroying the world but the reputation of England’s greatest literature figure William Shakespeare with Anonymous or is he simply presenting fact?. This Friday 28th October Anonymous will be released here in UK & Ireland a film that Emmerich insists is true fact that Shakespeare did not write his famous works but it was 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere (played by Rhys Ifans), the film is set in the back drop of Elizabethan England on the brink of civil war, illicit affairs.
So is Anonymous pure fabricated entertainment or the truth the conspiracy theorists of the world have been waiting for? Since the film started production right through to recent screenings at festivals, the films American release it has been the centre of heated debate between supporters, supporters of Shakespeare and this Friday you can decide for yourselves.
