Robert Eggers To Direct Sequel To Labyrinth For Tri-Star

David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth

Robert Eggers certainly is an in-demand chap! After the huge success of Nosferatu, which garnered four Academy Awards Nominations yesterday, and word he is set to make his new film, Werwulf, next year, he has officially signed on to what could be his biggest and highest-profile assignment yet.

Variety, amongst others, is reporting (via The InSneider newsletter) that the director has closed a deal to direct a sequel to 1986’s classic fantasy film Labyrinth. Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson had been on the project previously, but it is now Eggers who will be in the helmer’s chair – and it will be a SEQUEL rather than a remake/reboot/reimagining as had long been rumoured.

Eggers is writing the film with his writing partner Sjón, who will also write Werwulf with him, while Chris Columbus (Nosferatu) and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.

While the original was a box-office flop when released in cinemas, it became something of a phenomenon on VHS and subsequent releases and is now considered one of the decade’s best and most beautiful fantasy films. Directed by Jim Henson, the film starred David Bowie as The Goblin King who kidnaps the baby brother of Sarah – Oscar Winner Jennifer Connelly – and to win his freedom, she must solve the treacherous Labyrinth.

No news on whether this will film before or after Werwulf, with no release date yet stated.
