Reese Witherspoon Offers Update On Legally Blonde Prequel Series “Elle”

Reese Witherspoon is sharing exciting updates on the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, set to premiere on Prime Video. In an interview with People, Witherspoon revealed that production is set to begin in March, and the casting process for the series is already underway.
“We start in March,” Witherspoon said, expressing her enthusiasm for the project. She also shared the thrill of finding the actress who will play a younger version of Elle Woods, the character she made iconic in Legally Blonde and its sequel, Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde.
“We’re going through the casting process right now, and we’re picking who is going to play the young me. It’s kind of a trip,” Witherspoon explained.
The Elle series will explore Elle Woods’ high school years, offering insight into the experiences that shaped her into the confident, determined woman we first met in the original film. Witherspoon is excited to watch the talent auditions, noting how many impressive young actresses are in the running. “It’s so exciting too, to watch these young girls that are so filled with enthusiasm and excitement. There’s so many good ones. That’s the hard thing because there’s so many good people to choose from,” she said.
Prime Video officially ordered the series in May 2024. The show will be led by creator and showrunner Laura Kittrell, who is known for her work on Black Monday, Insecure, and High School. Witherspoon will executive produce alongside Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt. Elle will be produced by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, a part of Candle Media, and Amazon MGM Studios.
The original Legally Blonde film was a major hit, grossing over $141 million on an $18 million budget and earning Witherspoon a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. The success of the film led to the 2003 sequel and a Broadway adaptation.
